The Council is moving forward with preliminary engineering studies for the Bus Rapid Transit network projects for MD 355 and Viers Mill Road. This comes after DOT staff urged a short delay on appropriation requests until more information on the MD 355 system could be reviewed.

Each study will assess the different engineering options along each leg of the system. These include using center of the road bus lanes, reversible median bus lanes, curb-side stops, as well as other options. The Viers Mill Road study was appropriated $1 million, and the MD 355 study was appropriated $3 million. Both appropriations were allocated for use over next two years.

At the public hearing on these appropriations, all eight people who testified supported the projects. Some offered preferences for how the MD 355 project is engineered, asking for "Alternative B" to be considered with one or two curb lanes used south of Tuckerman Lane to Bethesda.
