Many Americans think of Memorial Day as the start of the summer.  We look forward to a weekend of barbeques, fireworks, and visits to the pool.  But it is important to remember Memorial Day as an opportunity to honor countless American military heros who have sacrificed for all of us.  With many festivities around the area cancelled due to COVID-19, there is still a lot you can do to honor our men and women in uniform.

Create a care package to send to soldiers along with a handwritten note.  You can get more information and suggestions at Operation Gratitude https://www.operationgratitude.com/

Consider baking cookies for your local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) post.  Often these institutions welcome donations of books and movies as well.

Teach your children how to care for the American flag.  It is tradition to fly our flag at halft-mast from sunrise to noon on Memorial Day.  After noon, it is raised to the top of the staff until sunset.  Your family can also learn how to properly fold the flag.

Donate to a Veteran’s Hospital. VA Medical Centers can accept donations online via major credit card or debit from your savings or checking account and donations are tax deductible.  You may also consider giving holiday gifts, phone cards, or supplies to support recreational activities.  Go to the VA Voluntary Service page for suggestions and to find a hospital near you:  https://www.volunteer.va.gov/apps/VolunteerNow/   You may also contact Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at 301-295-4000 to inquire about volunteering or making a donation.
